چکیده

This paper describes a revenue management project with a major airline that operates in a fiercely competitive market involving two major hubs and having more than 30 parallel daily flights. The market has a number of unusual characteristics including (1) almost half of customers choose not to purchase the tickets after booking; (2) about half of customers purchase their tickets within 3 days of departure; and (3) a significant number of customers no-show or go-show. We formulate choice based stochastic optimization problems to maximize the expected revenue for the airline. The inputs of the stochastic models include booking arrival rates, competitor assortment selection, booking choice probabilities for the airline’s own flights as well as competitors’ flights, booking-to-ticketing conversion probabilities, and go-show and no-show probabilities. We build a number of booking choice models, including multinomial logit models, nested logit models, and mixed logit models. The latter two types of models are aimed at incorporating unobserved heterogeneous customer preferences for different departure times. We formulate corresponding deterministic (fluid) optimization problems under each of the three booking choice models. We designed a column generation algorithm to compute optimal or nearoptimal solutions for the deterministic problems, and the solutions are used to make assortment selections for the stochastic problem. The models used as input for the optimization problems are calibrated using 2011 data or 2012 data. Simulation studies using 2012 data show that the fluid based booking policies generate significantly more revenue than the airline’s existing policy, and that policies based on the simpler multinomial logit models perform better than policies based on nested logit and mixed logit models, even when the simulation is based on the latter models, and even though the latter models seem to be more realistic.

Revenue Management for Parallel Flights with Customer-Choice Behavior

We consider the simultaneous seat-inventory control of a set of parallel flights between a common origin and destination with dynamic customer choice among the flights. We formulate the problem as an extension of the classic multiperiod, single-flight “block demand” revenue management model. The resulting Markov decision process is quite complex, owing to its multidimensional state space and th...

A Genetic Algorithm for Choice-Based Network Revenue Management

In recent years, enriching traditional revenue management models by considering the customer choice behavior has been a main challenge for researchers. The terminology for the airline application is used as representative of the problem. A popular and an efficient model considering these behaviors is choice-based deterministic linear programming (CDLP). This model assumes that each customer bel...

Solving Bi-objective Model of Hotel Revenue Management Considering Customer Choice Behavior Using Meta-heuristic Algorithms

The problem of maximizing the benefit from a specified number of a particular product with respect to the behavior of customer choices is regarded as revenue management. This managerial technique was first adopted by the airline industries before being widely used by many others such as hotel industries. The scope of this research is mainly focused on hotel revenue management, regarding which a...

An Approximate Dynamic Programming Approach to Network Revenue Management with Customer Choice

We consider a network revenue management problem where customers choose among open fare products according to some pre-specified choice model. Starting with a Markov decision process (MDP) formulation, we approximate the value function with an affine function of the state vector. We show that the resulting problem provides a tighter bound for the MDP value than the choice-based linear program p...

Joint Optimization of Star P-hub Median Problem and Seat Inventory Control Decisions Considering a Hybrid Routing Transportation System

In this paper, we study the problem of integrated capacitated hub location problem and seat inventory control considering concept and techniques of revenue management. We consider an airline company maximizes its revenue by utilizing the best network topology and providing proper booking limits for all itineraries and fare classes. The transportation system arises in the form of a star/star net...
